Wireless survivor € ™ s Guide: Surviving to 2.4 GHz low power

Executive Summary

What = "http://www.cypress.com/products/?gid=14 href"> wireless sensor networks, wireless sense and control the growing industrial and demand for personal area networks have in common? Two things: Wireless, ultra low power consumption. Historically, these two have always been contradictory, due to physics and the energy required to transmit signals, and recently, in response to the growing number of wireless solutions € "congestion. If you thought the spectrum of 2.4 GHz of wireless spectrum has become overcrowded, Leta € ™ s review some of the new wireless technologies, which soon will join the party. A quick review of the list of the 2009 International CES Innovations honorees, as well as exhibitors include: Several Wireless-N Routers Gigabit network, Wireless HD Video / Audio, Blu-ray Wireless, Wireless headphone / speaker, Wireless Sensor Networks, and the list goes on, and this is only the annual Consumer Electronics Show. The list grows exponentially when you include lighting control, home automation, automatic meter reading, building control and automation and industrial process control and automation applications. We are witnessing an evolution wireless exciting! This evolution has taken up thanks to numerous innovations in wireless technologies themselves as well as the radios are used to transmit and receive signals € "itâ € ™ s obvious that would not be where we are today, if every wireless application requiring large power sources and difficult to apply or had to be recharged every hour or two.

How have 2.4 GHz wireless technologies tailored to meet these requirements? For solutions wireless capabilities, the response has been historically to reduce energy consumption of the components that make up the solution € "that the microcontroller and radio transceiver. ™ € s Moorea this law as the response continues to improve, however, now at a rate of diminishing returns. What was 100s to 10s milliamperes improvements in fuel economy is already close to 5 and 1 milliamp differences in efficiency. Therefore, Whata € ™ s next? How can we further improve energy efficiency in our integrated wireless systems? As with most innovations, we must think outside the box and look at these solutions in the context of the systems used. In particular, instead of focusing only on the energy efficiency of the components within the system must analyze their interactions in the system. I propose that the most important factors that play a role in further increase this efficiency is a combination of the protocol or algorithm that adapts to changes in the environment and the system functions and capabilities that enhance reliable communications between devices in the system and reduce the number of wireless transmissions. In this article, I'ma € ™ ll highlight how these two changes in the way they view wireless solutions Embedded can help developers and designers survive the 2.4 GHz spectrum at low power.

Adaptation to environment

Adaptation to the environment is an evolutionary efficiency running inside our DNA. If the world had no land mass or even land masses less it is done, we can all have webbed feet and possibly up to the gills, as our DNA naturally evolve through natural selection, only the strongest and better adapted to the environment would survive. In a similar context, wireless technologies that have the ability to adapt to RF environments increasingly overcrowded is surviveâ € "and, through the law of transitivity, so will the systems used.

Adaptation in the context of technology wireless is the ability of a system to measure and respond to the hostilities faced thema € "mainly the RF interference. A system that can detect RF interference, or interference effects that can then implement countermeasures to respond appropriately. For example, Leta € ™ s Suppose we have a wireless technology that can measure the signal strength of receiving a communication operation. Based on this signal strength and knows the baselines ideal for harsh environments and a technology can know what the environment and how it seems ideal or the environment is tough. A less elegant means of knowing the environment may include detecting the media also failed attempts. The latter method, however, becomes a more reactive approach to the activation of adaptation and therefore would be less effective, but equally effective for the end. Regardless of the method of evaluation and understanding of the environment, The next step is being able to respond € "the physical action of adaptation to the medium ambiente.La Act environmental adaptation of technologies wireless capabilities is quite large, but can include actions such as changing output levels € "speak softer or stronger, the activation of a more robust € communicating "speak more clearly, increasing the speed of communicating €" talk faster, or moving to a quieter environment to communicate. The first response of the evolution of output in response to the environment has a clear logical sense terms of reduced output in an RF quiet environment, can be counter-intuitive as the reverse. In a noisy environment and a wireless application integrated where power is like gold, the act of using more energy to achieve the same communication through sounds expensive. But leta € ™ s review what happens if you donâ € ™ t. Assuming all other things remaining the same and constant, a radio transmitting power levels to lowerthan needed to complete a communication transaction is attempted repeatedly transmitted over a short period of time and more-than-likely, more power burn a solution that immediately transmits the same data in fewer attempts for greater power output. Leta € ™ s throw some math in this example to help to explain this second intuitive approach. First, the setting: a radio is configured to transmit to +4 dBm, or 34.1mA, per transaction and a second radio is configured to transmit a-5dBm, or 20.8mA, per transaction. Power needed to transmit the data is defined as the number of attempts multiplied by the power per transaction for each of the radios. In this case, itâ € ™ s very clear that if the +4 dBm radio can transmit data in one pass, while the other radio-5dBm, has more than one attempt, 4 dBm radio burned less energy to obtain the same data through. Whata € ™ s important here, however, is a system ™ € s ability to dynamically raise or lower the power required in response to the Environmenta € "use more power when needed they do not need to be preserved. Another way to respond to the RF environment is the ability to speak slowly and clearly, or its inverse, faster. In a hostile environment, if a system dynamic can turn half slower but more robust communications, may be able to improve their ability to cope with the effects of interference without affecting to her communication.

Here are two examples of doing just this:

  1. using modulation schemes such as Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum, and

  2. Advanced error correction at the time in transit. Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) is a modulation scheme that essentially spreads its signal in a relatively larger signal that allows more than the original signal is received, even if there is a sign of greater power in the same area spectrum. Another use of DSSS is to take the underlying principles and apply it to the data portion of a packet that is transmitted, and eventually have a more robust error correction forward. In the latter case, for example, one can encode a smaller piece of data over a wider package of data and then transmit packets data. Thus, the system can cope with the interference and still get the message.

The inverse of this method of adjusting is knowing when the interference is less worrying and take advantage of the quieter environment by providing a more even pace means less robust. Again, the important aspect of these methods to adapt to the environment is the dynamic medium of exchange between these two approaches.

Finally, the method available next, but certainly not least, is to respond physically to move to a quieter environment in the presence of noise. Two methods used today by some technologies are a constant and predictable movement across the spectrum, and another approach that moves only when necessary. While both are relatively effective, the latter is more efficient because 1) the system moves less often, and 2) the system locates and moves to quiet environments instead of a jump that can result in constant motion unless the spectrum ideal areas sometimes.

As with most of the responses to the challenges, the best approach for adaptation is a system to be able to adapt dynamically through these three dimensions. A system that can detect and respond to a multitude of countermeasures will be better able to adapt to a variety broader environments and minimize energy consumption.

Reliability Efficiency =

Due its importance, leta € ™ s to further discuss how reliability leads to improved energy efficiency in a system. Reliability in this context is the ability to a wireless solution to communicate with minimum broadcasting. Relay, as seen above, is a means of communication in face and in no way is a method of adaptation to an RF environment. How many times have we heard the clichà ©, work smarter, not more? This is true in RF systems as well. One response to increased reliability ™ € systematize s to overcome a hostile work environment is clearly more intelligent, while that the act of broadcasting constantly for the same data in the act of working more and is less efficient. When does the reliability in the cost of efficiency? When the application of technology has no need of redundancy or robustness that can be implemented to increase reliability. So, as noted above, the supplier end of the efficiency and therefore the ability to survive in the 2.4 GHz spectrum at low power is the ability to adapt to their environment, or more importantly, their ™ € Customerâ s diverse environments.

Conclusion

So, how does it compare wireless technologies to determine if one is more efficient than the other? To quantitatively assess both is to make each test in an environment consistent with the final application. Although expensive and time consuming, this method results in better analysis and provide the true indicator of the solution that will lead to better efficiency. A qualitative analysis, in addition, can provide a less costly and timely to evaluate these solutions € "or to reduce the number of solutions it wishes to adopt for quantitative analysis. This can be done easily by simply answering the following questions for each of the solutions proposed € "™ € more Yesa s more then the system will be able to adapt to their environment and more efficient than the solution is in the final.
