PCMCIA Wireless Card
How Can I Block The Internet On A Laptop?
According to the Federal Trade Commission, approximately 9 million people each year have their identities stolen, some of them by online hacking. These days, most laptop computers are pre-configured for wireless Internet and can automatically detect WiFi signals from local hot spots. If you don't need to use the Internet and prefer to stay disconnected, there are several ways to blockyour laptop from Internet access, ranging from temporary to more permanent measures. http://www.papatek.com/PCI-Wireless-LAN-Card/
Disabling specific connections temporarily
Look at the wireless network indicator. In most cases (for Windows users), this will be a small monitor icon in the system tray on the lower right corner of laptops running Windows. If there is no "X" through it, you are connected to the Internet. Right-click the icon. If you simply wish todisable the current connection, select "View Available Wireless Networks," then highlight thecurrent connection and select to disable it. If you want to disable the entire wireless connection for this session so it won't connect to any other hot spot, select the "Disable" option. This turns off the configuration your wireless card uses to find the Internet.

Removing the network connection
Without a configured network connection, your wireless card cannot connect to the Internet. If you
want to remove that configuration more permanently, go to the "Start" menu, then "Control Panel,"and select "Network and Internet Connections." Open "Network Connections" and locate the wireless connection noted by a radio antenna icon. Highlight it, press "Delete," and confirm that you wish to delete it. Your wireless card will not be able to access the Internet again unless you create a new wireless connection in this panel. (If you see several wireless connections and you are unsure which
is in operation, delete all of them.) If you prefer not to remove the connection completely, right-click it and select "Disable," which should keep the connection turned off until you re-enable it.
Disabling the internal wireless card
Another more permanent way to block the Internet is to disable the wireless card. Go to the "Start" menu, then "Control Panel," and select the "System" icon. (Change the Control Panel to Classic View,
if necessary, to find the "System" icon.) This pulls up the "System Properties" window. Select the
"Hardware" tab, then "Device Manager." Look for "Network Adapters" in the directory list, and click the plus sign to open the list of adapters. Locate the wireless card, right-click it, and select"Disable." This turns off the internal wireless card until you re-enable it.
Tips and Warnings
If you choose to disable the wireless card through the Device Manager, be careful to select the correct adapter to disable. If you are unsure which one it is, do not take this step. That way you won't disable the wrong thing and possibly cause more serious problems.
If you are using a Mac rather than a PC running Windows, the process will look a little different. http://www.papatek.com/Ethernet-PCMCIA/200Mbps-PowerLine-Communication-Adapters.html
Most MacBooks use the AirPort wireless card, which can be controlled and disabled by clicking the radio signal icon in the top right area of the screen.

Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer. Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me? Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use. Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed. For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time: 802.11b 802.11a 802.11g To learn about the differences between the standards and select the right one for your network, click here for an easy-to-understand chart.
