Linksys Wireless Card Usb

What is the best way to set up a wireless network connection for a Apple imac g3 computer???

I have an old imac g3 computer: 350MHz (slot loading) running the earliest version of os X. Not sure how much RAM, though I know it has no less than 64MB. I also have a linksys wireless-g router.

My main question is: Should I buy an Airport card (with adapter, of course) or one of those USB wireless cards???

With the Airport Card...
Do I need to install any software with it?
Will it connect through the linksys router or do I need a Base Station?

With the USB Wireless card...
Will I need to update my operating system (I looked at some that said a min. of OS X 10.3)?

In general...
How well does the internet even run on these old computers???
Are there ways to improve speed etc...???

First thing to do Click on the Apple Menu (upper left corner) => About This Mac.

You will be able to see, the exact amount of memory you have. Next click on: More Info for everything else about your system.

Next open a Finder Window. Applications => Utilities => AirPort Setup Assistant. That is what you will need to set up your wireless.

Yes I'd recommend you get an AirPort Card. You should probably go to an Apple Store to buy it. So you can be sure to get the right one for your system.

A G3 iMac is probably good for very basic internet stuff. Just don't expect it to do everything a a recent Intel based Mac (with 10 times the power) can do.

OS X 10.3 Panther is a good OS, and probably about the most recent version you'll be able to upgrade that iMac to. It might be a bit slow on a system that old. Make sure you max out the RAM before you upgrade. You'll need it.

Linksys Wireless N WRT160N Router - Review

You use a wireless router in a LAN. A wireless router has the following features:

1.It has LAN ports, which function very similar to the ports in a network switch

2.It also has a WAN port which allows you to connect to a wider network

3.It has a wireless antenna.

The antenna allows you to connect to other wireless devices such as - wireless repeaters, wireless bridges, Network Interface cards etc. You will find many wireless routers on the market, but not all may be equally effective. One of the best wireless routers that you can use is the Linksys Wireless router. This sleek, flat looking router has a very unique chassis which looks like an UFO. The best feature of this router is that it does not have an external antenna. It has an in-built antenna which gives it a very compact and sophisticated look. This router would cost you about $80.

This cute looking wireless router has standard 4 network ports. The router has an array of diodes which emits lights on the front side. This light emitting diodes shows the status of the wireless network, the Internet and the status of the ports.

When you buy this wireless router, you will get Advisor software which works well with both Windows and Mac. The software provides you step-by-step set-up procedures.

A very striking feature of Linksys Wireless N WRT160N Router is its content filtering system, which is called 'Access Restrictions'. This allows you to restrict access of a particular computer in a network.

Though it offers such great features, it has its own drawbacks. It does not have a USB support. It allows Internet speed of only 100mbps, which is by far very slow.

Amazon.com Product Description Are you tired of running wires through your house to keep your computers networked and connected to the Internet? Have you recently purchased a wireless data card only to discover that you have to open up your computer to install it? Don't worry, help has arrived. With the Linksys WUSB54GC Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter, you won't need power drills or screwdrivers to connect to the Web anymore. The Linksys WUSB54GC Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter converts a USB port into a 54 Mbps Wi-Fi connection. All you'll need is an available USB slot. You simply plug the adapter into your USB port, and immediately you'll be connected to your wireless network. It can't get much simpler than this. By incorporating USB 2.0 and Wireless-G protocols, the Linksys WUSB54GC can immediately begin delivering data rates up to 54 Mbps (five times as fast as 802.11b) without the trouble of running wires or opening up the case of your desktop computer. To install the adapter, you simply plug it into any available USB port. (It's compatible with both USB 1.1 and 2.0 ports, but 2.0 will yield the fastest speeds.) You can plug it directly into your PC, or you can use the included USB extension cord to put the adapter anywhere you'd like, up to five feet away. Because the adapter gets its power through the USB connection, no power cord is necessary. The included setup wizard walks you through configuring the adapter to your wireless network settings, step by step. Once you're connected, you can keep in touch via e-mail, access the Internet, use instant messaging to chat with friends, and share files and other resources such as printers and hard disk storage space with other computers on the network. You'll also be able to connect with any of the growing number of public hotspots springing up in coffee shops, airport lounges, hotels, and convention centers. The new push-button setup feature makes it easy to configure your wireless devices. Just push the button on the access point and on your other enabled wireless device to automatically create a safe connection, protected by the industrial-strength security of Wireless Protected Access (WPA) and 128-bit encryption. This means that your data stays secure. What's in the Box WUSB54GC USB adapter, USB extension cable, setup wizard CD-ROM, user's guide on CD-ROM, and quick installation guide.

Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer. Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me? Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use. Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed. For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time: 802.11b 802.11a 802.11g To learn about the differences between the standards and select the right one for your network, click here for an easy-to-understand chart.
